$img_titleDr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) often used to describe RSS as a powerhouse. The third Sarsanghchalak of RSS Balasaheb Deoras decided to put this huge power of selfless dedicated workers trained through the rigors of RSS to social uplift and transforming the lives of the depressed classes of the society. In adherence to his wishes the Seva Bharati started its first center in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area (E Block) in 1979.

The center was nurtured by senior RSS pracharak like Vishnu Kumar, Susheelkumar Bhakhadi, Pt. Vishwamitra, Rajeev Bhardwaj, Prakash Arya and Suresh. They were the founding pillars of this center who dedicated their entire life to translate the vision of Deoras into effective reality. And their efforts did not go vain.

The sapling they planted and nurtured with their tireless efforts, sweat and tears soon grew into a huge banyan tree with its nine branches scattered into different localities reaching out to every household with a positive message. Balwadi, Bal Sanskar Kendra, sewing center, health care center are some of the activities worth mentioning under this project. Besides, a school for the students of standard I to VIII is being run by Seva Bharati. Regular evening coaching classes for students of standard VI to X constitute one of the prime activities of this center.

“These tuition classes are proving to be a boon for the students of this seva basti”, says Ashok, District Secretary of Seva Bharati, Jahangirpuri. “Not only get the students, but the teachers also, attached to these classes and their students,” he adds.

  • Om Prakash Pathak is associated with this center since last 25 years. An octogenarian, he surpasses even the younger ones in his enthusiasm and style. He participates in the multi-faceted activities including gathering of food grains, training new activists, or visiting the donors regularly.
  • Mrs. Bharadwaj is offering her selfless services at this center since past 19 years. She comes here at 9 in the morning and leaves at 4.30 pm. She started a ‘bhajan mandali’ for the women of the area who come regularly and sing the devotional chorus. This helped in improving the moral and ethical value standards of these women.
  • Seva has become inseparable part of Pushpa Sharma’s who has a long association of over two decades with this center. She teaches the Balwadi students here.

The center also imparts value education to the students in addition to the regular secular education. Says Suneeta Goyal, “The students are taught Sanskrit shlokas, mantras, devotional bhajans and patriotic songs to inculcate moral and value education to them. Besides, all major festivals are also celebrated with participation of each one in the area”.

Seva Bharati activists conduct regular health check up camps for the people in this area. A team of five doctors visits various localities and creates health awareness amongst the people. They serve them whenever there is any outbreak of epidemic. Dr Pannalal is one amongst the doctors who is providing health services since last 12 years. He examines 50 patients per day regularly. Thus, Seva Bharati activists look after the all round development of the people living in this neglected area of the national capital.
